Classic Hummus – Made Oil-Free and Great to Dip

THE MIRACULOUS CHICKPEA

The most common question I get asked when people try to eat plant-based vegan is “what are some filling and savory vegan snack ideas?” As an avid snacker such as myself, the options are endless! For example, you could make bars, chips, raw veggies, or homemade hummus!

My favorite snack is my tried and true Classic Hummus. It is perfect to pair with crackers, chips, or veggie sticks. Yes, you can buy hummus in the store, but it’s actually much more affordable to make it yourself. Not to mention, you may feel secure in knowing that there are no additives or “funky” ingredients in your homemade hummus.

Oil-Free, Healthy, and Satisfying

My plant-based, vegan, oil-free classic hummus recipe doesn’t require a laundry list of ingredients. It doesn’t involve you searching for ingredients you have never heard of before. Instead all it requires is a nice blender or food processor, a can of chickpeas, and a few other ingredients.

The Options are Endless

Hummus is the perfect snack to make because you can make it any flavor that you want. It is as easy as taking my recipe and adding in some curry powder, hot sauce, chili powder, any oil of your choice, and the list goes on!

This easy recipe can be whipped up in no time and perfect to meal prep for your week or serve up at your next potluck! Trust me, this hummus will be gone before you know it, so make extra!

I hope you enjoy snacking on some hummus as much as I do. It is such a handy recipe to have and the flavor options are endless! ENJOY!

TIPS & TRICKS

  • Peeling the chickpeas will result in a smoother texture. If you prefer your hummus a bit more “lumpy,” then go ahead and leave the chickpea skins on.
  • Slowly add the cold water to reach your desired hummus consistency and thickness. Just a heads up, the hummus will slightly thicken when stored in the refrigerator.
  • Don’t be afraid to make it your own and add some flavoring!

THE MORE YOU KNOW

Tahini

Tahini helps provide that creamy texture in most hummus recipes. It is simply grounded up sesame seeds. Think of it like peanut butter or almond butter, but made with sesame seeds. You can find this at most grocery stores in the same section you would find other nut butters.

Blending Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 4

Equipment

  • Food Processor or Blender

Ingredients

  • 1 can Chickpeas (15oz)
  • 2-3 Garlic Cloves optional
  • ½ Lemon juiced
  • ¼ cup Tahini
  • ¼ cup Cold Water
  • 1 tsp Salt optional

Instructions

  • Open can of Chickpeas and drain/rinse. For a smooth consistency, peel each chickpea by gently squeezing each chickpea to “pop off” the skins (this can actually be very soothing).
  • Add chickpeas, garlic, salt, lemon juice, and tahini to the food processor and blend.
  • Scrape the sides and continue to blend until everything is incorporated.
  • If possible, slowly add ¼ c of cold water while the blender or food processor is running. Add additional water, 1 tbsp at a time, until desired consistency, then ENJOY!
