Hurricane Sweet Potato Fries – Great as a Side
What is Hurricane Style?
Growing up in Hawaii, the staple seasoning in every household is called Furikake. It is a simple seasoning that is made from roasted sesame seeds, chopped up dry seaweed, sugar, and salt. It goes perfect on rice, vegetables, popcorn, and even these Hawaiian-style sweet potato fries!
One of my favorite snacks that is popular in Hawaii is called Hurricane popcorn. It is pretty much regular popcorn with furikake sprinkled all over. I decided to take this and make my own Hurricane Sweet Potato Fries!
Simple, Delicious, Oil-Free
These Hurricane Sweet Potato fries are perfect to serve for a potluck, side dish, or just a nice snack. They are completely vegan, plant-based, and crazy delicious and slightly addicting. Not to mention, they are very easy to make and require minimal to no oil!
They are based on my Oil-Free Sweet Potato Fries! To learn more about how to make the perfect oil-free fries, head over to my recipe!
ENJOY!
I hope these Hurricane Sweet Potato fries really stir up your next potluck or even your own snack! ENJOY just a little piece of Hawaii!
TIPS & TRICKS
- The longer you boil the sweet potato before baking, the softer the inside of the fries. But don’t boil too long or else it may fall apart!
- Adding Nutritional Yeast (Nooch) may seem odd, but the nutty flavor pairs perfectly with the Teriyaki sauce.
THE MORE YOU KNOW
Furikake
Furikake is a Japanese seasoning that is made of sesame seeds, dried seaweed, sugar, and salt. It can be found in the Asian section of a grocery store or at any International/Asian grocery store. Be sure to check the label because some brands may include dried fish in the seasoning.
Teriyaki
Teriyaki Sauce is very similar to soy sauce, but it is sweeter and thicker in texture. The base ingredients of Teriyaki sauce are soy sauce, mirin, sugar, and ginger. It’s perfect to add a little sweet flavor profile to a savory dish. This can be found in the Asian section of most grocery stores.
Nutritional Yeast
Nutritional Yeast (Nooch) provides a nutty flavor that many associate with a cheesy flavor profile. Great source of B12 and can be found in most grocery stores in the condiments section.
