TIPS & TRICKS

  • Once you mix the dry and wet ingredients, be swift with loading up the molds and getting the donuts into the oven. The mixture of Baking Powder with a liquid starts the rising reaction of the donuts. It is best to get them in the oven before they deflate.
  • When you are icing your donuts, turn the donut like a door knob and lift to get a nice icing finish.
  • Sift cinnamon sugar on top of donuts for a lighter finish.

THE MORE YOU KNOW

Donut Pan

There are very affordable donut pans that you can buy on Amazon. I use a silicon donut pan to allow me to push out the donuts. You can use a metal pan as long as you use oil or butter to prevent any sticking.

Whole Wheat Pastry Flour

Whole Wheat Pastry Flour is not the same as Whole Wheat Flour, instead this is lighter and will result in less dense bakes. You are welcome to substitute any flour of your choice, but it will result in a different texture. Check out my Flour Alternatives Guide for help!

Coconut Sugar

I used a dark Coconut Sugar because I had this on hand; however, you may use any type of sugar (cane, brown, etc.).

Equipment

  • Donut Pan

Ingredients

Apple Spice Donut

  • cups Whole Wheat Pastry Flour
  • 5 tsp Baking Powder
  • tsp Cinnamon
  • ½ tsp Nutmeg
  • ½ tsp Ground Ginger
  • ¾ cup Maple Syrup
  • cups Apple Sauce
  • 2 tsp Vanilla Extract

Maple Glaze

  • ½ cup Powdered Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Maple Syrup

Cinnamon Sugar

Instructions

  • First make the Donuts. Preheat oven to 350 degree F. If using a metal donut pan, prepare it with oil to prevent sticking.
  • In a large bowl, combine all dry ingredients (Flour, Baking Powder, Cinnamon, Ginger).
  • In a separate large bowl, combine all wet ingredients (Maple syrup, Apple sauce, Vanilla Extract).
  • Slowly add and mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients until well incorporated.
  • Transfer mixture into a piping bag (optional, but much easier to fill molds) and pipe mixture into donut molds evenly, filling up to about ¾ of the mold.
  • Place donuts into the oven and bake for 8 – 10 minutes or until golden brown. May use the toothpick test (insert a toothpick and make sure when you pull it out it is clean) to make sure donuts are baked all the way through.
  • Remove donuts from oven and cool completely on a cooling rack before decorating.
  • Make the Cinnamon Sugar. In a small bowl, mix together sugar and cinnamon, then set aside for later.
  • In a medium bowl, mix together Maple Glaze ingredients.
  • Once donuts are completely cooled, dip each donut halfway down into the icing. Then sprinkle cinnamon sugar mixture on top. Set aside to harden and repeat for the remaining donuts.
  • Enjoy!
