The Best Vegan Mashed Potatoes and Gravy

The Best Vegan Mashed Potatoes and Gravy

The perfect duo, match, and dish to help elevate each other. Mashed Potatoes and Gravy are the classic duo to help supplement any winter holiday meal. Although if I am being honest, I absolutely indulge in this all year round because these are the best vegan mashed potatoes!

Focusing on the holiday factor of Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Thanksgiving and Christmas are the perfect time to whip up these delicious vegan recipes! Mashed Potatoes and Gravy are the true MVPs of any holiday meal. Whether you’re whipping these up for a holiday potluck, dinner, or meal prep for you or your vegan/non-vegan friends and family, everyone will be more than satisfied.

The secret to making the best vegan mashed potatoes is the type of potato. Many people will use plain old russet potatoes, but I prefer Yukon Gold potatoes. You also have to make sure the potatoes aren’t too wet, otherwise they won’t be fluffy.

In terms of gravy, I am a huge advocate for mushroom gravy, but on special occasions this just doesn’t cut it. Instead, use a gravy that is more neutral in taste and based on a vegetable broth.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use Yukon Gold potatoes to get fluffier and more buttery mashed potatoes, trust me!
  • Using a simpler gravy, like the one below, will let you taste the base dish more than a different style of gravy.
  • Using a good tasting vegan butter will lead to a tastier gravy.
  • Use whole wheat flour to give the gravy the brown color. Other flour can be used but the color won’t be the same.

The More You Know

Seasoned Vegetable Base

I recommend using Better Than Bouillon’s seasoned vegetable base. It’s so easy to keep in the fridge and use whenever a recipe calls for vegetable broth. This stuff is amazing and my go-to vegetable broth. All you have to do is add water and the jar can make up to 30 cups for vegetable broth.

Roux

Many soup recipes require starting with a roux. This helps with thickening and in this case very important to help thicken the gravy. It’s not a complex cooking technique and only requires cooking butter and flour together. I recommend using a vegan butter and whole wheat flour.

Vegan Butter

There are a variety of different brands you are able to find at most grocery stores. I use the most commonly found vegan butter brand, Earth Balance. This butter can be found in almost every grocery store. Miyokos vegan butter has been found to be a “better” brand with the absence of palm oil, but it is much more expensive.
